One of the biggest mistakes many people make when they take on a home renovation project is that they fail to plan properly. When you don’t have a plan on something as large and costly as a home renovation project that is when you make mistakes such as not buying sufficient wallpaper or paint to finish the job. Very often when the person returns to where they bought their decorating materials they find the particular range of paint of paper they want has come to an end. While this sort of thing is frustrating and can waste a lot of time, it is not as bad as taking out a fireplace without checking whether it was attached to a load bearing wall. If you’re thinking about renovating your home then the first thing you need is a plan.
When you start to plan your project, you need to decide is who is going to manage it, are you going to manage the project yourself or do you plan on hiring a professional? A lot will depend on what you plan to renovate, if you have major plans such as removing a wall or putting in a new floor then you may want to consult a professional for those aspects of the project. The second thing on your list should be taking measurements etc for all areas that you plan to renovate, then you can put your measurements into a home décor website and it should give you the quantities of paint, paper, fabrics and anything else that can be measured up.
If you do intend to use a professional designer/project manager then you should find out as much as you can about previous projects they have worked on. Even better, if you know someone who has recently had a professional remodelling job done then ask to see it and if you like it, ask for a recommendation. You may only require a professional for some aspects of the job and intend to do the rest yourself, if this is the case then you should take care over the materials and fabrics that you use if you want them to last a while.
One thing that you should pay particular attention to when planning your project is the amount of time that you have to complete the project. You don’t want to spend half of the available time giving your living room that professional interior design look, when you also want to decorate your dining room, kitchen and bathroom. If you plan on new kitchen units then you should measure the spaces where they are to go very carefully, be sure that you have left room for a good sized sink and drainer and places to put your white goods. There is nothing worse than getting all the units in only to find there is no space for your washing machine.
A lot of modern houses and flats have open plan living spaces, which often means that the living and dining areas are at opposite ends of the same room. When this happens you need to take care that the paint, paper and accessories you use for the living room are not screaming out for attention against the materials you use in the dining space. Once you have finished your planning then you might want to find out whether you should increase the premiums on your building and contents insurance, just in case you are struck by the unexpected. Before you commit yourself to home insurance make sure that you get more than one quote.
