artist date [ahr-tist deyt] noun. 1. a weekly date with one’s self to do something creative, out of the ordinary, juicy and fun. 2. one of the main practices of julia cameron’s "the artist’s way".
last night i participated in an inspirational teleclass with the talented kimberly wilson. one of her suggestions for the summer was to go on more artist's dates. sounds delicious, right? so, tonight i will set aside a couple of hours for myself, and i will document it and then share it tomorrow. i am excited!
have you ever been on an artist's date?

I've never had an artist's date ....I'm too flakey with my creativity to allocate specific times ....order scares it away so I just embrace it when it comes! :)
I do however use that picture quite a lot because I LOVE it!
I love love love artist's dates - I read the Artists Way in 2007 so actually had a term for these adventures then, but it's something I started to do in law school - ie take a couple of hours here or there just for myself to recharge. After reading JC, though, having a term/concept also gave me more perspective and somehow has made them even more valuable. Lately, I am on a kick of trying ot take mundane activities and making them more artist-date-like - ie finding novelty in the everyday.
Yes yes yes! I love artist dates!
i love this idea. i just started a little project to take a picture a day and that will be my daily artist date. and beautiful picture by the way :)
that sounds very delicious.
i actually was on a artist date yesterday and didn't even know. i feel my next date may be even funner thinking of it that way. :)
i hope you have a splendid date tonight!
fantastic idea. everyone needs some alone time with their creative self. :)
can't wait to see the product of your artist date <3
wow i love that picture!!!
the artist's date are always the hardest for me to do.
I have! And actually taking the time to devote yourself to the date is the hardest part :) It's about being in the moment. Tricky, very tricky. But so worth it!
bien sur - j'adore artist dates!! i think the concept is brilliant and have been trying to incorporate them into my otherwise mundane work days. i'll often pop away during my lunch break to a fun cafe and journal or read or just people-watch. i can't WAIT to hear all about yours ce soir!
this is so funny. i just wrote about my artist group on my blog last night!
Nina, we must be on similar wavelengths, as I was just thinking about what my artist's date this week should be! It's so important to find time to "play" with yourself. One of my favorite recent artist's dates was wandering through a bead store, playing with all the colorful beads and thinking about jewelry I could make. Afterwards, I treated myself to some really good sushi and people-watched while eating outside on the restaurant's terrace!
absolutely, i also posted about an artist's date on my blog :) they are so much fun and so necessary!
I've never heard of this before, can't wait to see yours!
I've never heard of it, but I fully intend on scheduling them in from now on.
I think once it's scheduled I will find myself inspired and anticipating it!
:)
wow, definitely something I would want to try... sounds great and just absolutely lovely... :) can't wait to hear what you have done...
i simply adore "the artist’s way"!
have fun with this.
After reading Julia'a book, artist date-once a week became a must for me..Very inspiring
This is a great idea! I do my artsy stuff whenever the moment strikes, but I love the idea of setting some regularly scheduled time for yourself to be creative. I will be having an artist date soon!
Nina, I went to Kimberly's site but am not exactly sure what it is and how to go about it. Would you mind telling me a bit more? Sounds very cool.
What a great concept! I definitely need to integrate artist dates into my life :)
I've had a few, I call them "creative dates". Though this post was a great reminder to check out Julia Cameron's books again, they are such an inspiration.
That does sound like a great idea and something I might have to institute in my own life!
Sounds fun, can we make it a group effort?
Corey at Tongue and Cheek had a walking date with her daughter Chelsea, walking the streets of Paris and posing for portraits of the reflection in the window displays. A great artist-play-date!
